We would love to have you share your knowledge, expertise, research, challenges and successes with us as we address issues related to Hispanic health disparities, Hispanic healthcare research, Policy development, Issues related to rural Hispanic health care, and Behavioral and social environmental issues inHispanic healthcare.

Conference goals:

Participants will have opportunities to:

  • Discuss nurse-led innovative clinical interventions and strategies to reduce Hispanic health care disparities.
  • Disseminate research findings that describe biobehavioral and socioenvironmental factors that contribute to Hispanic health care disparities.
  • Discuss creative strategies that promote recruitment and retention of Hispanic students in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs.
  • Discuss current local, state, and federal policies and their implications for Hispanic health care.
  • Network with colleagues

The conference is planned around four tracks


Track 1:Administration
Track 2: Education
Track 3:Practice
Track 4: Research


Podium presentation will be 50 minutes long with an additional time of 10
minutes for a question and answer period.


Poster presentation requires that the author be available by their poster to present during the designated poster session

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

National Association of Hispanic Nurses
34th Annual Conference 

Hispanic Nurses: Creating Pathways to Reduce Health Disparities 

July 21st-24th, 2009 

Crowne Plaza Riverwalk Hotel, San Antonio, TX

PRESENTATION FORMAT

Nurses, educators, students, researchers, and policy makers are invited to submit abstracts to be considered for presentations at the NAHN 2009 annual conference, Hispanic Nurses: Creating Pathways to Reduce Health Disparities. Abstracts will be accepted for oral and poster presentations. Abstracts will be considered for the following categories:

  1. Issues in Hispanic health disparities;
  2. Hispanic healthcare research;
  3. Policy development;
  4. Issues related to rural Hispanic healthcare;
  5. behavioral and social environmental issues in Hispanic healthcare.

 Abstracts can be submitted for more than one presentation category.

  • The paper presentation will be 20 minutes long with an additional 10-minute question and answer period for a total of 30 minutes. The abstracts selected for this format will be part of the concurrent session.
  • The poster presentation requires that the author be available by their poster to present during the designated poster session. The poster should be at least 4 feet by 3 feet.

Abstracts with a clinical focus strongly encouraged.

GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

A maximum of two abstract submissions per person will be permitted.

  1. Title of the abstract (typed in capital letters) on the first line.
  2. Specify the program track (1, 2,3, or 4) on line 2.
  3. Specify you are submitting for: Presentation, Poster or Either on line 3.
  4. List the presenting author first (first name, last name and credentials) on line 4.
  5. List institution/agency on line 5.
  6. List contact information and include email) on line 6.
  7. Skip two lines and type the abstract, singlespaced, using Times New Roman or Arial font size 12, with one inch margins on all sides. The abstract is limited to one 8 ½ X 11 page (no exception) written in Microsoft Word.
  8. Submit abstract as an email attachment no later than 5:00 p.m. January 15, 2009.
     
  9. Email a completed biographical data form and disclosure form (download forms: http://nursing.uthscsa.edu/CE_Events/CE_home.shtml) and abstract to:

  10. Receipt of confirmation will be sent back to the first author via email.

    Acceptance of abstracts will be sent no later than January 23, 2009.

    The first author will be given a reduced conference registration fee upon acceptance of abstract (reduced rate is per person not per abstract).

    The deadline for abstract submission is January 15, 2009.


In order for your abstract to be reviewed, we require that you follow each guideline listed above. Upon acceptance of your abstract, you will be sent detailed information about setting up your abstract and specific conference.

Membership Update

 

Dear members of NAHN. I would like to take this oppurtunity to tell you about some of the changes that were approved by the members for our new application at the last Annual Conference in California. The dues for active members with a chapter will be $100.00 for the year with an option to sign up for two years at a discounted rate of $175.00. If you are interested in this discounted rate please make a note on your membership application. We hope to have an updated application posted soon. We will have further disscussion on expanding the two year discount to other membership categories at our next annual conferrence in Boston. Feel free to contact me or any of the members of the Membership Committee if you have further questions. Also, if you are interested in becoming a Member Ambassador please contact the national office to sign up. We need your help and support in recruting new members to our association. 2008 NAHN Awards Information and Application Forms

Information Eligibility Requirements Published Online: 2008 NAHN Awards Application

The NAHN established the Ildaura Murillo-Rohde Education Excellence Award, the Henrietta Villaescusa Community Service Award and the Janie Menchaca Wilson Leadership Award to honor Hispanic nurses through the country and provide them with special recognition. This is also an opportunity for NAHN to be recognized and for NAHN members’ recognition of NAHN. Hispanic nurses will be honored for their work in the community as well as for their spirit and dedication to serving the Hispanic community. 

National awards are an excellent opportunity for all members to celebrate their activities and to recognize their accomplishments as they see what a great profession they have chosen. NAHN awards are a chance for members to show off their creativity and have some fun depicting what a Hispanic nurse means. The annual celebration of awards recognizes accomplishments and current endeavors of members of the NAHN.

ILDAURA MURILLO-ROHDE EDUCATION EXCELLENCE AWARD

This award is presented to honor NAHN members who have distinguished themselves in any scholarship area and/or nursing education. Qualifications for the award are any one or all of the following categories:

  • Outstanding contributions in nursing education, research, and practice
  • Recognized commitment to excellence in nursing
  • Distinguished clinical expertise

HENRIETTA VILLAESCUSA COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

This award is presented by to honor NAHN members who have contributed to the improvement of health in the Hispanic community. Qualifications for the award are any or all of the following categories:

  • Outstanding contributions as demonstrated by policy or program involvement of;
  • Regional or national significance
  • Distinguished community health practice
  • Publicly recognized commitment to improving the health of the Hispanic Community

JANIE MENCHACA WILSON LEADERSHIP AWARD

This award is presented to honor NAHN members who have distinguished themselves as nursing leaders.
AWARD CRITERIA:

  • Outstanding leadership contributions at the community, state or national level
  • Leadership reflected in the areas of planning, practice, or implementation of a program that has impacted the Hispanic community

SARAH GOMEZ ERLACH HUMANITARIAN AWARD

This award honors NAHN members who seek to improve health delivery to the rural poor and migrant farm workers and their families.  Qualifications for the award are any or all of the following categories:

  • Initiating or implementing health program(s) for the economically disadvantaged and/or migrant farm workers and their families.
  • Publicly recognized statewide or national rural health program(s).
  • Advocacy and commitment to public health services to the economically disadvantaged and/or migrant farm workers and their families.

(For Education Excellence, Community Service & Leadership Awards)

  • The Nominations Forms may be photocopied for multiple nominations
  • All nominations must be type or clearly printed
  • All nominations submitted become property of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN)
  • In addition to nominations form colleagues, clients, administrators, or co-workers, NAHN members are encourage to nominate themselves
  • 300 words or less description of the nominee’s qualifications/accomplishments
